Creating an online presence on a tight budget

With more than a billion people in the world having access to the internet and more than 28 million in South Africa (52% of the population). It is no longer a question of if you should create an online presence. If your business is not online it is safe to say you are not in business, even if you are not making sales online your business has to be on the internet, so that when people search for your business they find a professional entity online.

Many business owners want to get online but are under the impression that it still costs an arm and a leg to set up a website. Things have changed dramatically and it is now easy to set up your own website without having to pay a developer to do it for you. At the end of the article i have listed some resources which will help you create your online presence.

Here are a few tips to get online fast:

  1. Build a website

This seems obvious but like I mentioned people seem to find this part extremely scary.

There are many drag and drop options like WIX and Weebly. I recommend WordPress, it is simple and easy for any beginner and you can build a website without having to learn how to code. Most hosting companies have a one click installation and there are tons of free information on how to get started with WordPress.

  1. Create a Blog on your website

Write a few articles related to your industry or business. The best way to do this to write a bunch of articles at once and schedule it to be posted once a month or once a week or even once every 2 weeks.

  1. Create your Social Media Pages

This is an easy step, if you have a Facebook Account create a business page, fill all your business details. Share the page with your friends and family and encourage them to share it with their friends. Post pictures and information about your business at least once a day, you could even boost posts to reach more people and get more page likes. Do the same with your Twitter account and any other Social Media platform you like. On Twitter you must Tweet 3-10 times a day to get any results. Also link your pages to your website.

  1. Build an email list

Email marketing is vital to you creating an online presence fast. The key is to create a big email list by creating an opt in page, give people something of value to opt into your list or newsletter. There are many different email marketing software to choose from in the market, here are a few:

  • Getresponse
  • Aweber
  • MailChimp (0 – 2000 subscribers Free)
  1. Add your business to Google my Business

Many business owners are not aware that it is free to list your business on Google My Business. It creates a professional look and when people search for your business on google it is easy to find.

In conclusion, if you are a small business or a freelancer you don’t need to spend thousands of Rands on creating an online presence. You will have to pay some money for things like your domain name and hosting, but most of the tools needed are free or relatively cheap.
